More homes planned on edge of Malvern

A plan to build 130 more homes next to a huge development on the edge of Malvern has been put forward.

The proposals would see the homes built on Newland Grange off Stocks Lane in Newland on the edge of Malvern next to a huge 800-home development planned for neighbouring land.

The plans have drawn a flood of opposition from local residents and campaigners across the county wanting to save the “precious” wildflower-rich meadow.

Critics say the land is rich with wildflowers and wildlife and needs to be protected.

Simon Bovey of Wells Road said: “This is a species-rich meadow, and it would be vandalism to destroy it. We have to have planning that works with our environment not against it.

“Furthermore, that road is totally unsuitable to the increase in traffic.

If approved, the plan by Beechcroft Land would see the homes built next to a 800-home development by Gleeson Developments which was approved in principle by the council in 2019.

Another objector, Ian Clay of Orford Way in Malvern, said: “Malvern is rapidly being built over without any regard for the countryside and open spaces.

“I have lived in Malvern all of my life and have watched it grow and smother the countryside that used to be here. More housing will put extra pressure on local schools, doctors’ surgeries, local police and our roads.

“It’s time to stop destroying our countryside, stop destroying habitat for our wildlife.”

A further objection by Paul White of Stocks Lane said: “The proposed development is of great concern to us, not only because the large number of new buildings would completely overwhelm the existing established village, devastate a beautiful area of green space and look out of keeping with the existing housing, but also because the site is very close to the current ‘800 homes’ site.”

Also objecting, Sam Homfray of Peachfield Road, said: “It seems a short term financial driven decision to allow development to occur so near an area of outstanding natural beauty, destroying vital and rare ecosystems that should be preserved for the next generation.”
