Covid cases soar in city

The number of Covid cases recorded in the city has surged by more than 1,800 per cent in the last month.

The latest Public Health England figures show that the number of new coronavirus cases recorded in Worcester in the week up to July 10 has increased to 483.

A total of 25 cases were recorded in the city in the week up to June 10 meaning the number of new Covid cases has increased by more than 1,800 per cent in the last month as more people came together to watch Euro 2020 and more lockdown rules were relaxed.

The total for Worcester remains the highest among the county’s six districts.

The latest figures show the state of the city ahead of the ending of lockdown on Monday (July 19).

A massive increase was also seen across the county with the total number of cases in Worcestershire rising from 69 on June 10 to 1,853 a month later – a huge rise of more than 2,500 per cent.

An even bigger surge took place in Malvern Hills with cases rising by 3,220 per cent from five in June to 166 a month later.

Huge rises in cases were seen across all of the county including rises of over a thousand per cent in Wychavon and Wyre Forest.

A total of 295 cases were recorded in Wychavon – including Evesham, Pershore and Droitwich – in the week up to June 10 meaning cases surged by more than 1,600 per cent.

A similar growth was found in Wyre Forest where cases increased from 19 in the week up to June 10 to 297 by July 10 – a rise of almost 1,500 per cent.

Cases in both Bromsgrove and Redditch also increased significantly during the month.

A total of 48 cases were recorded in Bromsgrove on June 10 but that had increased by more than 720 per cent to 397 a month later.

Redditch had 33 cases recorded in the week up to June 10 and that had shot up by more than 550 per cent to 215 cases by July 10.
