Covid cases continue to rise in Worcestershire

The number of new coronavirus cases recorded in the city has continued to rise and remains the highest in Worcestershire.

A total of 220 new cases were recorded in Worcester in the week up to July 1 – a rise of 254 per cent compared to the previous week – and remains the highest among the county’s six districts.

Public Health England said the city’s infection rate is now 217.3 cases per 100,000 people.

The number of cases recorded across Worcestershire more than doubled in the week to 909.

Worcestershire’s infection rate is currently 152.6 cases per 100,000 people.

The highest number of cases recorded in Worcester were in Battenhall and Diglis where 27 cases were recorded in the week up to July 1 – up from two in the previous week.

A total of 24 cases were recorded in Dines Green and St John’s – increasing from seven in the previous week – and 23 cases were recorded in Lower Wick and Bromwich Road also increasing from seven in the previous week.

Twenty-three cases were recorded in the north of the city centre and 21 cases were recorded in the south of the city centre.

Cases in Redditch more than tripled in a week rising to 122.

The infection rate in Redditch is now 143.1 cases per 100,000 people.

A total of 180 cases were recorded in Bromsgrove in the same week – a rise of 51 per cent.

Case numbers have also increased in Malvern Hills rising to 119 in a week.

The number of cases in Malvern Hills increased by 95 per cent compared to the previous week meaning the infection rate is now 151.2 cases per 100,000 people.

Elsewhere in the county, 126 cases were recorded in Wychavon which includes Evesham, Pershore and Droitwich – a rise of 60 per cent compared to the previous week.

The infection rate in Wychavon is now 97.3 cases per 100,000 people.

Covid cases in Wyre Forest increased to 142 in the same week – a rise of 163 per cent compared to the previous week – meaning the district now has an infection rate of 140.2 cases per 100,000 people.
