Average council tax bill in Worcester is set to rise by as much as £70

The average council tax bill in Worcester is set to rise by as much as £70 next year.

Worcester residents in band D households will be asked to pay £1,936 for the next year from April under proposals.

The rise includes proposed increases in contributions to both city and county councils as well as increased contributions towards the cost of fire and police services.

Worcestershire County Council has asked for an extra £53 from the average band D household in the next financial year – rising to £1,396.

The money given to the county council pays for services such as education, transport, social care and waste management.

Three quarters of the money raised from the proposed increase in council tax would be spent solely on adult social care, the council said.

Worcester City Council has proposed a £5 increase for the average band D household for its services – rising to just over £200 for the upcoming financial year.

The city council is responsible for recycling and bin collections as well as planning and housing.

With a final decision on the two council’s plans to up council tax still to be made, Herefordshire and Worcestershire Fire and Rescue Service and West Mercia Police have also both proposed an increase to its precepts next year.

West Mercia Police is asking for just under £250 from the average band D household in Worcester – a rise of £9 in the yearly cost of policing that residents will be asked to pay.

The region’s fire service has put forward proposals which are likely to see its council tax precept rise slightly to £89.37 – an increase that would match previous yearly rises.

Parish precepts for city residents in Warndon and St Peter’s would also have to be included in council tax bills.

Each authority will discuss the individual precepts in the coming weeks ahead of the start of the new financial year in April including the county council share at a meeting of its cabinet on February 3 before the police precept is discussed at a meeting of the West Mercia Police and Crime Panel on February 4.
