A plan to revamp the look of a prominent Hereford pub has been given the go-ahead.

The Plough Inn, at the corner of Whitecross Road and Plough Lane, is to get six new fixtures, according to a planning application put forward last October by its owner Star Pubs & Bars, the UK pub arm of brewer Heineken.

These were a new 3.2-metre high illuminated free-standing sign, a lit main panel (naming it as The Plough rather than Plough Inn), a round sign hanging from an ornate metal bracket with the pub’s new logo, new brass lanterns above two of its three doors, and two further panels for announcements on the outside walls.

The pub was also to be illuminated by 10 floodlights.

A new colour scheme for the outside of the pub was also shown in illustrations submitted by the pubco. As the building is not a listed building, no permission is required for this change.

The current black-and-white half-timbered effect on the upper floor will be replaced with “iron grey” on the timbers and silver grey on the render. The doors meanwhile will go from black to graphite grey.

There were no objections to the plan from the city council or the public.

The council’s highways and environmental health officers both requested a requirement that the new lighting meet industry standards so as not to be obtrusive.

But planning officer Laura Smith was happy that the submitted lighting plans would not compromise road safety, and indeed considered them “an improvement” in visual terms.

The Campaign for Real Ale’s online pub guide WhatPub describes the Plough Inn as “a 1930s mock half-timbered replacement for a sixteenth-century pub of the same name”.
