Renovation work could take place at Ludlow Racecourse to modernise some of its buildings.

Ludlow Race Club Ltd has submitted plans for its changing and medical facilities at the site, near the A49 in Bromfield.

The proposal is to demolish the existing tower containing the medical personnel accommodation, and the temporary portacabins that houses the changing rooms, tearoom and kitchen.

All of the functions will be re-provided in the new building, which will be used as changing facilities for jockeys and a bar-restaurant for owners. It could also be used for other functions on non-race days.

“The proposal encompasses the renovation and modernisation of an existing facility at Ludlow Racecourse, maintaining the building’s overall footprint whilst significantly improving its functionality and accessibility,” reads a design and access statement submitted to Shropshire Council.

“The design retains much of the front façade’s existing character whilst selectively modernising elements to meet current standards.

“The rear elevation introduces new cladding and window configurations to enhance both aesthetics and functionality. Windows and secondary doors are uniformly positioned along the façades, creating a rhythmic architectural language that respects the building’s heritage whilst embracing modern design principles.

“The internal layout has been carefully reconsidered to improve circulation and create clear separations between public and service areas.

“The redesigned space incorporates dedicated areas for essential racecourse operations, including medical facilities, changing rooms, weighing areas and professional support spaces. The modernised layout places particular emphasis on creating an inclusive environment with improved accessibility throughout.

“The renovation demonstrates a thoughtful approach to modernisation that respects the existing architectural context whilst introducing contemporary facilities and improved accessibility features. This careful balance creates a more inclusive and functional environment that will serve all users of the racecourse facilities well into the future.”

Anyone who wishes to comment about the scheme (reference 24/04863/FUL) can be do so by February 17.
