Monmouthshire County Council is actively engaging with the Ministry of Defence regarding the necessary work to reopen Inglis Bridge in Monmouth.

Since 13 September 2024, Inglis Bridge has been closed to pedestrians following a survey conducted by the MOD, which indicated that the bridge is unsafe for public access.

Inglis Bridge, owned by the MOD, is a vital link for pedestrians and users of wheeled devices in the Monmouth community.

Following a request by the MOD to the council, an Emergency Closure Notice was issued for the bridge while the MOD explored options for undertaking the required work to reopen it. A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order has been issued for six months, effective from 2 October 2024.

If no resolution is reached by 2 April 2025, an extension may be requested until the MOD completes the necessary work to make the bridge safe for public use.

Monmouthshire County Council has been in regular contact with the MOD regarding the reopening and continues to push the organisation to find a solution.

On 1 November 2024, Council Leader, Cllr Mary Ann Brockelsby, wrote to the MOD to express the council’s disappointment with the lack of progress in restoring the bridge. The council has not received any confirmation regarding a timeline for the commencement of the work.

You’ll be able to find a copy of the letter here: www.monmouthshire.gov.uk/2024/11/council-leader-calls-for-action-regarding-inglis-bridge/.

The council understands the concerns of the residents affected by the closure and continues to seek clarity through ongoing dialogue about the necessary work.

Council Leader, Cllr Mary Ann Brocklesby, said: “We, as a council, along with the residents of Monmouth, are frustrated with the progress being made by the MOD. MCC elected members and officers continue to engage with the MOD to find a solution for the bridge’s reopening.”

“As the owners of Inglis Bridge, the MOD is responsible for ensuring this historic and well-used bridge is made safe and reopened.”

Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs, Housing & Tourism, Cllr Sara Burch, said: “This public right of way is a vital link for residents in Monmouth to access green space and local amenities. We’ll continue engaging with the MOD to ensure the works are carried as soon as possible.”
