A city secondary school has put forward plans to demolish a gym to make way for new classrooms.

The plans would see an “outdated” gym at Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College in Worcester demolished and replaced with a new building housing two new classrooms.

A new gym would be built next to the Timberdine Avenue school’s sports hall and new toilets would be built to replace the current “inadequate” block.

A statement included with the application said: “The school has the need to provide additional teaching space in order to fulfil curriculum requirements, the existing multi-gym facility is outdated, and the current toilet provision is inadequate.

“These proposals intend to address these issues by replacing and updating its accommodation.

“The existing multi-gym building will be demolished to provide space for the new classrooms.

“The new gym extension will be located adjacent the existing sports hall which is a more practical location and the existing toilets will be extended.

“The application is for a new single-storey two classroom n]block to replace the outdated existing multi-gym building on the north east of the site, a new single-storey gymnasium extension to the existing sports hall which is on the south-west of the main school buildings and a single-storey extension to existing toilet facilities.”

The gym, which dates back to the 1960s, would be demolished to make way for extra teaching space.

The plans can be viewed via the planning section of Worcester City Council’s website.

The application number is 22/00925/FUL and consultation ends on December 12.
