Labour MP Mike Amesbury says he was involved in Cheshire 'incident' where he 'felt threatened'

A Labour MP has said he was involved in an incident where he "felt threatened" and is cooperating with police.

Mike Amesbury, the MP for Runcorn and Helsby, said he felt "threatened on the street following an evening out with friends" on Friday night in Cheshire.

"This morning, I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during this incident," he added.

"I will not be making further public comment but will, of course, cooperate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police.

"I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community."

Video of the incident appears to show Mr Amesbury standing over a man lying on the floor in Frodsham.

The MP tells the man "you won't ever threaten me again" while pointing at him, before saying: "Yes I am [the MP], yes I am, and you won't threaten the MP ever again, will you?"

Cheshire Police said officers were called at 2.48am to reports of an assault in Frodsham.

"A caller reported he had been assaulted by a man in Main Street. Inquiries are ongoing."

A man who gave his name as Jono recorded the incident and posted it online.

He told Sky News he saw an altercation and "that's when I got my phone out and started recording".

"It wasn't nice to see," he added.

Jono said he "didn't see what happened before" the altercation.

"The lad fell to the floor, everyone was trying to help him. I recorded it because it did look serious."

He said the MP "went off" and "our taxi turned up then, so we went off".

Conservative MP Richard Holden wrote on X that "only a handful of people" know what happened before the video was recorded and said, rather than "piling on" Mr Amesbury, urged everyone to "allow Cheshire Police to do their job".

The Labour Party said it is aware of the incident and that Mr Amesbury, who has been an MP since 2017, will "cooperate with any inquiries" the police have.
