Work on a new cycle route and footpath is planned to commence alongside the A518, connecting Newport with Donnington and Muxton from Monday.

The new plans will add a further 2km of cycling and walking routes to the boroughs extensive cycling and walking network.

When complete, the new cycle path will also connect the wider National Cycle Network route (NCN) 55 creating links with Ironbridge and beyond through to Staffordshire including scenic off-road routes along former railway lines.

Cabinet Member for Economy, Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, Councillor David Wright said: Cabinet Member for Economy, Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, Councillor David Wright said: “This new route will make a big difference to both cyclists and walkers looking to extend their activities - be they travelling from Telford into Newport and Staffordshire or for visits into Telford.

“This investment further ensures that people have safe routes that provide greater access to green spaces and allows more freedom to explore in a healthy way.”

Drivers can expect to see temporary traffic management from Monday, 18 October with a one-way system in place from the start of half term week on Monday, 25 October.

This route forms part of the ambitious cycling and walking plans for the borough and a £2.4 million investment into active travel, helping pedestrians and cyclists to stay safe and continue to contribute to the health and wellbeing of residents following our consultation earlier this year.

Active travel means making journeys by walking or cycling - usually short journeys, like walking to the shops, walking the kids to school or cycling to work and benefits including improved health, saving money, reducing congestion and in turn improving air quality while increasing levels of activity.

The work is set to commence on Monday, October 18 with a one way system in place from Monday, October 25 and due to complete late in 2021.
