Spitfire flypast planned in Hereford for Armed Forces Day

An iconic World War Two fighter aircraft is expected to fly over Hereford later this month.

A Spitfire will fly over the city to mark this year’s Armed Forces Day on June 29.

There will be commemorative events across the whole county during the week starting June 24.

The Rifles Regiment will exercise the Freedom of Leominster on June 29, Armed Forces Day, by marching through the town to Corn Square at 11am.

The Mayor’s parlour will be open at Hereford Town Hall from 10am to 3pm so people can view the city’s silver and charters dating back to 1189. There will also be a quiz.

This will be followed by a dedication of First World War Centenary memorial at Queenswood County Park at 1.40pm before the Spitfire flypast in Hereford at 1.30pm.

The Rifles will then march through Hereford starting at the Shire Hall at 3.30pm before a military band performance at Suvla Barracks on Harold Street, Hereford at 6pm.

There will be dedication service at St Peter’s Church, Bullinghope at 11am, a procession from the church at 11.15pm before a bring and share picnic at 12.30pm.

This will be followed by the unveiling of a memorial to the Rotherwas Munitions Workers at 1.30pm.

The Armed Forces flag will be raised on the morning of June 24 in Bromyard, Hereford Leominster and Ross while Ledbury will raise it on June 29.

Residents can also attend lectures and films from 6.30pm at the Courtyard on June 25 and 26 and the opening of a Memorial Gate in Earisland at 7.45pm on Thursday.
