An MP has joined a petition to scrap the new booking system at tips in Shropshire.

Helen Morgan, who is a Liberal Democrat MP for North Shropshire, says she is “wholeheartedly” supporting her party’s campaign, which has far seen over 4,000 people sign after it was launched on New Year’s Day.

Introduced in November, the new system,  Shropshire Council say, helps reduce the number of people from outside the county using the service, therefore reducing costs. There would also be less congestion, added the council.

However, the Lib Dem councillors in Shropshire argue that it makes “no financial sense” and it is “using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.”

They now have the support of Mrs Morgan, who is asking people to sign the petition on her website.

“Over the past weeks and months, hundreds of residents have complained to me and my team about recent changes to bins, waste, and access to tips in Shropshire,” said Mrs Morgan.

“Liberal Democrat councillors are campaigning to scrap the poorly thought-through tip booking system, and have collected nearly 4,000 signatures – a huge total, which will put the Conservatives who run Shropshire Council under real pressure to rethink.

“I’m wholeheartedly supporting their campaign and petition, which North Shropshire residents can sign online on my website.

“The more pressure we put on and more signatures we get, the better our chances of success.”
