M4 relief road plans scrapped

The long-awaited M4 relief road in South Wales has been scrapped.

The Welsh Government said the cost of the one-point-four billion pound project was not "acceptable", after 30 years of discussions.

First Minister Mark Drakeford also said he attached a "greater weight" to the effects on the environment.

The dual three-lane motorway south of Newport was hoping to relieve congestion on the existing M4 around the city.

Local people fear the region will become "paralysed by an ageing transport infrastructure operating beyond capacity" - but environmental campaigners are pleased the project's been ditched.
