An officer from Herefordshire who jumped into a fast-flowing river and saved a man’s life with no regard of his own has been nominated by for the National Police Bravery Awards 2023.

PC Chris Rogers, while guarding a scene at Greyfriars Bridge, Herefordshire on 21 June last year, saw a man jump into the river from a bridge 25 metres up before landing face down. The male appeared to be unconscious in the water.

The river was fast flowing and murky and he had no idea of the hazards and debris under the water, but time was critical as hypothermia was setting in rapidly.

Without hesitation, PC Rogers selflessly made the decision to enter the icy water and wade over to administer urgent first aid.

Using all of his strength, he lifted him from the river and dragged him onto the riverbank where he commenced chest compressions and urgent CPR.

By this point, backup arrived and assisted with the administration of further first aid until the arrival of medical professionals.

The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance. Despite the height of the fall and the fact he was unresponsive, all he suffered was facial injuries. He made a full recovery thanks to the efforts of PC Rogers whose decisive actions and courage saved a life.

West Mercia Police Federation Chair Barry Horton said, “The bravery and selflessness that Chris showed that night shows that no matter where you are or in this case what force you may be assisting you must always have your wits about you in the event a situation like this arises. I’m proud to call Chris a colleague and believe he is a worthy nominee in this year’s bravery awards.”

Chief Constable Pippa Mills said: “PC Rogers put this man’s safety above his own, acting quickly to get him out of the river and then performing life-saving CPR. Chris’ quick, decisive actions undoubtably saved the man’s life.

“We are incredibly proud he is a part of West Mercia Police; he thoroughly deserves this nomination, and everyone here is delighted for him. Whilst this incident puts him in the spotlight for his exceptional bravery, I would also like to acknowledge the positive impact he has on his local community every day.”
