Plans have been put forward for eight new detached houses off a main road near Hereford.

Traditional housebuilder Oakwrights, based nearby, is seeking outline permission (application 243092) for the scheme by the A438 at Swainshill west of the city.

Part of the two-acre site is within the settlement boundary of the village, which is identified for growth in county planning policy, the firm’s application points out.

The scheme would involve demolishing an existing bungalow and associated outbuildings, and would use its established access onto the main road.

Designs for the individual houses would be set out in a later application. But Oakwrights has prepared a “plot passport document”, restricting their size and materials, and ensuring they would “uphold the established character” of the village.

“The eight self-build units will be sold individually to prospective self-builders who will then apply for the reserved matters for their own plot,” its application explains, adding there is a “demonstrable and significant shortfall” of such opportunities in the county.

Indicative plans show each two-storey house with a detached two-bay garage.

Comments on the application can be made until February 12.
