Civic leaders in Ledbury have agreed to spend more than £30,000 on refurbishing the town’s war memorial.

Ledbury Town Council hope the work will be carried out next spring ensuring they are completed in time for the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day in May.

The works will involve replacing the cobbles around the base of the High Street memorial with Portland stone slabs.

The base and upper stones will also be replaced where required and a drainage system will be installed to ensure no future flooding around the base of the stone.

The works should take around six weeks and are expected to cost £30,642,

The area around the memorial will be fenced off for safety and security purposes, but council officers hope disruption to pedestrians and traffic will be kept to a minimum.

A council spokesperson said: “As many of you are aware Ledbury Town Council has for some time now been discussing the refurbishment of the war memorial.

“Ledbury Town Council recognises that the war memorial is important to the people of the town and that it should be maintained and refurbished regularly to ensure its place in the town for many years to come.

“The council is pleased to inform the people of Ledbury that works and funding for the refurbishment to the war memorial have now been agreed and it is anticipated that the work will be carried out in early spring 2020, ensuring that the works will be completed in time for the 75th anniversary of VE Day on the weekend of 8 May 2020.”
