Alcohol-related deaths look like they have fallen in Shropshire during the past year.

In 2023, there was a record 65 deaths caused by alcohol consumption in the county, which was up from 54.

However, indicative figures for 2024 show that there were only 36 deaths. These can increase or decrease, with data on deaths subject to variation that be may be caused due to delays in final registration or external impacts, such as coroner inquests.

The indicative figure for Telford and Wrekin meanwhile, is 23 – the same recorded in 2023.

A spokesperson for NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin said: “Alcohol is a key risk factor in the development of many long-term conditions such as high blood pressure or hypertension, atrial fibrillation (abnormal heart rhythm), CVD and stroke.

“In line with national priorities set out in the Long-Term Plan, we are committed to enable and support people living in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin to make healthier choices and prevent causes of ill health, including alcohol dependency.

“Across the county, there is a range of support available to reduce the harm caused by alcohol and other drugs, from prevention and early intervention, harm reduction, treatment, and support with recovery.

“Among these services are the Shropshire Recovery Partnership, the Healthy Lifestyles Service in Telford and the Alcohol Care Team based at the Princess Royal Hospital.

“As we review our plans as an Integrated Care System going forward, we will place even greater focus on prevention and reducing inequalities within our population that contribute to and worsen ill-health.”

More information about support available in Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin can be found on both the local authorities’ websites or by calling the Shropshire Recovery Partnership on 01743 294700 or the Telford STaRS Service on 0300 456 4291.

The Shropshire Drug and Alcohol Strategy and Telford and Wrekin Alcohol and Drugs Strategy also set out plans to reduce alcohol-related harm in all its forms, including increasing the number of people accessing local alcohol treatment services.
