General Election 2024: Expected declaration times for Shropshire constituencies

Voters in Shrewsbury will likely be the first in Shropshire to know how their constituency has voted in the general election on July 4.

But north and south Shropshire constituents are in for a later evening than their county town counterparts if they want to be among the first to find out their local results.

While times are estimates and subject to change, the first constituency expected to announce in the county is Shrewsbury at 3am on Friday, July 5, while results for North and South Shropshire are expected later that evening, at 4.15 and 4.30am respectively.

In the Telford & Wrekin area, both Telford and The Wrekin are also expected to announce at around 3am – with the race between organisers at Shirehall and Southwater as to who can get their results counted first set to be a close one.

Traditionally, ballot counters in the North-East of England have been the quickest to formally declare their results, with Newcastle Upon Tyne Central declaring within 90 minutes of polls closing in both the 2017 and 2019 general elections.

Meanwhile in the build-up to polling day, a small army of hundreds of council polling clerks, presiding officers and count staff are set to take up their posts as the county heads to the polls.

Around 800 specially employed polling staff will be heading out across the Shropshire Council area’s three parliamentary constituencies in the early hours of polling day to sharpen pencils and set up voting booths.

Each of the county’s 200 polling stations require a presiding officer and at least one polling clerk who receive specialist training several weeks in advance, while several hundred staff will also be employed counting ballots into the early hours of Friday morning at Shrewsbury’s Sports Village in Sundorne.

Polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm, and voters are being reminded that voter ID will be required in order to vote in person, such as a passport or driving licence. A list of acceptable voter ID can be found on the electoral commission website.

The council conducted a review of the county’s polling places in late 2023, which saw minor changes to 9 of Shropshire’s traditional voting locations. A full list of voting locations for each constituency can be found below:
