Fire crews have spent the night tackling a huge fire in Abergavenny.

Emergency services were called to Frogmore Street at around 8:35pm on Sunday.

The fire broke out at the back of The Magic Cottage Charity Shop.

A number of nearby houses were evacuated and a rest centre was set up at Abergavenny Leisure Centre.

A cordon remains in place which covers Frogmore Street, Regent Street, Princes Street and Baker Street.

Monmouth MP Catherine Fookes said: "I'm incredibly relieved to hear there were no casualties. My thoughts are with everyone impacted and my gratitude goes to South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Gwent Police."

"My office is here to support you. Please contact my office on 01291200139 or email catherine.fookes.mp@parliament.uk".

In a statement, Abergavenny Town Council said: "We have been devastated to learn about the loss of businesses and residences on Frogmore Street as a result of the fire that happened last night. We send our thoughts and prayers to all affected, and our deepest thanks to all the emergency services who have worked through the night and continue to work on site today."

"The pedestrianised roads through town are closed to traffic as a precaution and everyone is advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke."

Due to the ongoing incident at Frogmore Street, today’s Armistice Service which was due to be held at the War Memorial will now take place at the Town Hall on Cross Street.

There will also be the service at Abergavenny Castle with a maroon gun salute held at the same time.

Monmouth MS Peter Fox said: "My heart goes out to all those affected in Abergavenny. Thoughts are with the whole community who will be shocked at this devastating event."
