Changes are to be made to traffic management on the A40 in Herefordshire and Monmouthshire which will help reduce congestion after the road was partially closed by a rockfall.

Emergency traffic measures were put in place to get the A40 at Leys Bend open for drivers as soon as possible after the rockfall but also to ensure the safety of road users.

One lane is currently closed on the eastbound carriageway between Monmouth, to the west of the A446 Dixton roundabout at the Welsh Border, and the A49 Wilton roundabout.

The project team have now been able to review these emergency measures and, after consultation with other highway authorities and travel partners in the area, are to move the closure further down the road, past Dixton roundabout.

This will ease congestion at Dixton roundabout and help resolve the subsequent tailbacks. The changes will take place overnight on Thursday (28 March).

A 40mph speed limit will be in place through the roadworks and a temporary concrete barrier to stop any debris falling into the path of traffic.
