The Conservatives’ Jesse Norman has said how he managed to fight off a strong election challenge from Labour to retain his Hereford and South Herefordshire seat.

“I would like to think my inclusive brand of politics, the incredible amount of constituency work we’ve done, and the track record I’ve put together over 14 years, have played a part,” Mr Norman said after his victory was announced.

He said that while his party now enters a period of soul-searching, “the interests of my constituents and this county will always come first with me”.

The key issues locally are the state of the county’s roads and its main river, “on which we’ve made some progress but could do a lot more”, as well as its children’s services, he said.

I’ll be working across the whole span of politics in order to make things work for the better,” he added.
