Westfields overcame a strong Heather St John’s side in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie at allpay.park on Saturday to earn a home tie on 21st August.

Westfields now meet Coventry United who beat Worcester City 4-1 on Sunday.

Westfields had to work very hard for their win over the Midland League side from Leicestershire but a second-half goal-scoring spree led by Man of the Match Matt McDonald earned Westfields the win in the FA Cup.

Both sides started cautiously in the opening 45 minutes on a rain-soaked pitch but after a goal-less first half the game sprang to life when Westfields took a lead in the 54th minute when Harrison Summers worked a great opportunity for Matt McDonald who fired home from close range.

Westfields then increased their lead within 10 minutes when McDonald was again the goal-scorer when he curled home a lovely left foot shot into the roof of the net to give Westfields a commanding lead.

Heather St John’s were finding it hard to get into the game as Westfields defended stoutly and Ian Havard in the Westfields goal fielded long range shots well and also took a couple of difficult crosses whilst under pressure very well indeed.

Westfields then sealed the game in the 75th minute with a superb goal with a training ground free kick when Sam Hunt curled in a lovely left foot cross into the crowded penalty area and Richard Greaves raced in to score with a fine diving header into the bottom corner of the net.

Heather St John’s, who had played good, fast, attractive football, came back into the game and were continually thwarted by Westfields’ excellent defence in which Paul Hurrell and Joe Davies along with skipper Sam Rawlings and fullback Henry Dyde performed admirably.

Westfields’ 3-0 win gave them a home draw in the next round on 21st August, kick-off 3pm.

Westfields play their second Hellenic League Premier Division game on Tuesday when they visit Cribbs for an away game and then return home on Saturday, kick-off 3pm at allpay.park, when the visitors are Roman Glass St George.
