Westfields progressed into the Second Round of the Hellenic League Challenge Cup with a resounding 3-0 home win over visiting Hereford Pegasus last night at allpay.park.

The two teams gave an end-to-end non-stop performance in an excellent cup tie featuring these two local rivals.

Westfields were first to show in an exciting first half when Archie Muirhead got in tremendous crosses into the penalty area which put Pegasus under pressure but there was no-one on hand to convert the chance.

Westfields had a few opportunities to open the scoring when Jack Gittoes and Adam Newbury both had chances which flashed wide before Jack Gittoes headed Westfields ahead shortly before the interval with a far-post header from a Newbury corner kick.

After the break Westfields stepped up a gear and increased their lead when they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area and Adam Newbury put a superb free kick into the top left-hand corner of the net to put Westfields into a 2-0 lead.

The floodgates then opened and Westfields looked rampant with Archie Muirhead and Gittoes both looking strong down the flanks and it came as no surprise when Westfields substitute Joel Oswau got free on the right and crossed the ball and Gittoes raced in to prod the ball home past the Pegasus keeper.

This gave Westfields a 3-0 cushion and they used the opportunity to bring on their substitutes who all looked good as Westfields pressed forward.

Pegasus did get back into the game but they found Ben Vine and Joe Davies both in excellent form at the heart of the Westfields defence whilst in midfield Matt MacDonald worked tirelessly on his return from suspension.

Westfields went through with a comfortable 3-0 victory against their local rivals.

Westfields now play at home on Saturday against Royal Wootton Bassett, kick-off 3pm, at allpay.park and on Tuesday night they host Bromyard Town in the Second Round of the Herefordshire FA County Senior Challenge Cup tie, kick-off 7.45pm.
