Plans for a new look at Hereford railway station’s platform café have been put forward – but the proposed signs mis-spell one key word.

With stained glass and period stone and woodwork, the former Pumpkin on platform 4 is to become a Café Local, in what appears to simply be a rebranding.

But as the entire Victorian station is grade II listed, listed building consent is needed to enable the signage changes.

The plans put forward by London-based multinational Select Service Partner (SSP), which has a global turnover of over £2 billion, show white lettering on a dark blue background used throughout – but they mis-spell “Confectionery” as “Confectionary”.

“The concept is to design a retail unit without affecting the special architectural features of the station building on the platform elevation, while providing an attractive, comfortable and safe environment for travellers and staff,” its application says.

The signage would match the size of that previously used, while changes to the café’s internal layout would also be “minimal” and would be confined to new counters, floor and ceiling finishes and decorations, it explains.

Comments on the application for listed building consent, numbered 233334, can be made until December 14.
