A woman was arrested after unrest broke out during a match last Sunday.

Goytre Women’s FC were playing Tonyrefail when witnesses said a visiting player was assaulted and knocked unconscious.

A red card was brandished to a Tonyrefail player and an ambulance summoned to take the injured woman to hospital as the referee called the game off.

South Wales Police said a 25-year-old woman from Tonyrefail was arrested on suspicion of assault and was bailed pending further inquiries.

The South Wales Football Association was investigating.

A spokesperson for Tonyrefail Welfare Ladies said: "The whole club is saddened by this event, and we would like to send our best wishes to those who have been affected by this incident."
